The end of The Mandalorian season 2 left fans with mixed emotions as Grogu, also known as Baby Yoda, departed from his surrogate father Din Djarin to embark on Jedi training with Luke Skywalker.

However, the Disney+ series The Book of Boba Fett offered a surprising twist as Grogu reunited with Din and seemingly abandoned his Jedi training, raising new questions about his fate. Can Grogu be both Mandalorian and Jedi? Why didn't he choose the Jedi path? Will he ever wield a lightsaber or turn to the dark side?

Why didn’t Grogu choose the Jedi?

Grogu chooses between the Jedi and Mandalorian paths

Despite Grogu's previous Jedi training at the academy on Coruscant, he made the decision to leave Luke Skywalker and continue his journey as a Mandalorian, as depicted in the Book of Boba Fett when he chose Din's gift of Beskar chainmail armour over Yoda's lightsaber.

While his exact motivation is yet to be revealed, it is likely that Grogu developed a strong bond with Din, who had taken on the role of his protector and caregiver. As a young child who had experienced trauma and separation from his own kind, Grogu may have found comfort and a sense of belonging with Din and the Mandalorian culture.

Additionally, the Mandalorian way of life values independence and self-reliance, which could have appealed to Grogu's desire for agency and control over his own destiny. Thus, the bond and sense of security he found with Din may have played a significant role in his decision to stay with the Mandalorian culture instead of pursuing his Jedi training.

Will Baby Yoda turn to the Dark Side of the Force?

Grogu

The possibility of Baby Yoda turning to the dark side of the Force has been a source of concern for fans, given that he has exhibited some use of Dark Side abilities, such as Force choking stormtroopers.

However, it is unlikely that he will turn fully to the dark side anytime soon. Since he is not actively training in the Force, his abilities won't grow to a point where he would become a threat.

Nonetheless, in the long run, it is possible that he could resume his Jedi training with someone like Rey and be tested by the Dark Side. As history has shown with other Jedi, such as Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker, the allure of the dark side can be strong and may be tempting for an older Grogu to explore.

Can Grogu be both Mandalorian and Jedi?

The possibility of Grogu being both a Mandalorian and a Jedi has been a topic of discussion among fans. While it doesn't appear that he will rejoin Luke's Jedi academy and complete his training anytime soon, he has shown exceptional Force abilities that make him a prime candidate to become a Jedi.

In the short term, he may not be considered a full Jedi without completing his training. However, in the future, due to his species' long lifespan, it is possible for Grogu to become both a Jedi and a Mandalorian.

There are examples of this in Star Wars lore, such as Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian Jedi who created the Darksaber. As a result, it is not impossible for Grogu to follow in Tarre Vizsla's footsteps and become a force-wielding Mandalorian.

Will Grogu ever use a lightsaber?

Grogu's Force powers have continued to expand, leading many fans to believe that he has the potential to become a formidable force-wielding warrior and potentially use a lightsaber.

However, it is unlikely that he will wield Yoda's lightsaber, as he chose to leave it behind in favour of the Beskar armour. There is a possibility that he could wield the Darksaber and become a Mandalorian Jedi, following in the footsteps of Tarre Vizsla.

Given the show's tendency to offer fan service moments, it seems likely that Grogu will eventually get the chance to wield a lightsaber, which would be a significant highlight for viewers.
